From bad to worse!
Mark endured a hugely frustrating Chinese Grand Prix weekend. After a productive opening couple of practice sessions on Friday, his weekend headed downhill on Saturday and then reached rock bottom on Sunday when he retired from the race after 15 laps.
“That was a very disappointing weekend,” says Mark. “Every time I got in the car on Saturday and Sunday there was a problem, so I wasn’t able to show my true pace. For some reason it just wasn’t meant to be this weekend.”
Events started to unravel during the second segment of qualifying, Q2, when Mark’s car ground to a halt with a fuel pressure problem. According to the team, there had been an error with the refuelling bowser and it meant there wasn’t even enough fuel for the team to supply the mandatory one-litre fuel sample to the FIA back in the pits and, as per the regulations, Mark was forced to start from the back of the grid.
“It was a disappointing thing to happen, but I’m not getting too carried away by what happened,” says Mark. “Everyone in the team works extremely hard and it was just one of those things. It happened to Vettel in Abu Dhabi last year and it happened to me here. We need to understand what caused the problem and ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
Having been sent to the back of the grid, Red Bull Racing opted to start Mark from the pitlane and that allowed them to change the set-up of his RB9 and improve its race pace.
“It was clear that I had a big workload ahead of me,” says Mark, “so I needed a car that would give me the best chance of making progress. Straight-line speed was going to be important, so we made a few tweaks to the set-up and decided upon a pretty aggressive strategy about when to use both tyre compounds.”
Mark started the race on the fast-wearing option tyre and pitted after one lap to get onto the more durable medium compound as soon as possible, with the intention of making just two more pitstops during the remainder of the race. However, that plan ended on lap 15 when he came together with the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne.
“I was coming back through the field quite nicely,” says Mark, “and then I came upon Jean-Eric at Turn 6. I came from a reasonable distance back, but he was really wide and it looked like he was giving me the corner. When we got to the apex he decided he wanted to place his car there as well and there wasn’t much I could do about it at that point because I was already committed.”
Mark pitted to replace the broken nose of his RB9 and changed tyres at the same time, but his right-rear wheel came off on his out-lap and he was forced to retire. Adding insult to injury, the stewards deemed the collision to be Mark’s fault and issued him with a three-place grid penalty at next weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
“The boys said the wheel was secure when I left the pits,” says Mark. “But it came off at Turn 14 and that was that. Let’s hope that’s my bad luck for the year done in one weekend.”

on April 15, 2013 ReplyMark, pity about the weekend, ‘it wasn’t meant to be’. think the biggest thing to take from it, to stay calm and relaxed. if you stop enjoying what you do there’s more chance of failure. good luck for the next race. think you need a night out.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyWell done to Mark for keeping his cool and not getting into a scrap with his “team” I could see his “mate” cryin’ if that happened to him lol! What a coincidence all this bad luck occurs after a stormy race before, oh and being penalized 3 positions, Guess they’re protecting the little baby from a classy person who has every right to fight for the championship. I’d love to see Ferrari get Mark for the rest of the season, that would be epic! All the best Mark!

on April 15, 2013 ReplyMark,
It was a very disappointing race… The race without you really faded the vigor of the race.
I easily thought that things happened to you during this weekend were intentional, but now I feel ashamed of thinking like this is totally against Mark’s sportsmanship. Keep your chin up, Mark!!! -

How come so many mistakes in one weekend after a record breaking pit stop in Malaysia a wheel nut came off – any explanation !!! You are a very patient man mate !! You are surrounded with traitors. You are an honest competitor, keep fighting we are behind you all the way.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyYou can only try, and try you did, it sounds more like NO FULE went in at all when it was loaded in Q2, then the rear wheel to drop off, it had no impact from the Jean Vergne of which I thought was just a racing incident that happens in racing. The fix up went wrong after the pit. Is he or has MW been white anted ? It starting to look like it when yet another error from the crew, this makes sure MW is and remains as the number 2 driver and for next year as well if he were to sign up. My view a new team is required, look at the Italian red team.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyMark, while I have sat watching your career progress in the comfort of my loungeroom over the years, I can only hope that you can “reset the circuit breaker” and keep your focus in the cockpit. Silence is golden, humility breeds concentration and that elusive championship is yours if you can shut out the politics and do what you love – go faster than the rest. Either way, you have the respect of many including myself for what you have, and are achieving in sport at this level. When career choices can be successful or broken based on fractions of a second, many of us would not pass the test. Take the high road and know that the momentum will beat the DRS (Derogatory Remark Syndrome) whenever people activate it to overtake your own ambitions.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyI am not very religious but there is a saying of sorts that god tests those most who are capable of bearing the load. This would say a lot of Marks character. Its also stated that after a storm is a beautiful clear day. After the numerous challenges Mark has endured over the last 2x rounds the rest of the year is looking very promising. Dont lose sight of the path and the reward.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyBad luck mate, I just don’t understand what is “exactly” going on at Redbull, but one thing is for sure, your a fighter and always will be,that accident with JEV was rediculous,he did see you coming but shut the door firmly in your face, it’s done now though,on to Bahrain. Please please tell me the epic rumours I hear bout you leaving f1 to join the lemans series isn’t true, it’s been along time since we have had a successful Aussie in the sport (though i think DR will flourish with time) please don’t let this little German spoilt brat have the last laugh. It is YOUR team you did the ground breaking work to make them winners. Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi hope you reply mate-cheers

on April 15, 2013 ReplyHey Mark, bad timing after the weeks leading up to the Chinese GP, put it down to an unlucky weekend. It happens.. We still have all season to see you grab them podium wins. I’m hoping the Porsche rumors arn’t true and we see you in an F1 car for at least a couple more years. Would love to see you in the “Red” team if Red Bull arn’t supporting you 100%. Good luck buddy.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyMark, I don’t care what Horner says, it’s clear they aren’t going to give you a fair go again this year. If you’ve signed with Porsch, just give RB the finger and move on now…would love to see how RB do in the constructors championship without you. I’ll still be watching the F1 for Ricciardo and the other great drivers such as Alonso, Button, Kimi, Hamilton but I’ll also be watching Le Mans with much greater interest now 🙂 All the best Mark.

on April 15, 2013 ReplyHad a little time to think about the conspiracy theories going round and I think I am leaning a little towards it.
First Red Bull would have known they were not going to run Vettel in Q3 to save tyres which if we assume Mark ran he probably would have been in the top 4. So now we have Mark in front of Sebastian, lets work off a few ifs, if Mark had a good start, if Mark’s pit stops went well and if Mark raced well then he and Vettel would be together around 3/4 distance, given Mark had all the ifs go his way I guess he is in front of Vettel, and a very interested media watching whom the team favor. Or imagine Mark in front of Vettel mid race and a safety car comes out this stacks Vettel behind Mark in the pit lane.
As for the tyre falling off well don’t see that to often, I didn’t see the rear tyres connect with Vergnes car so its gotta be a pit error or pit plan depending how you want to see things.
Now Vettel is 26 points clear and now the team has a right to favor the best placed driver, yeah its only round three and yeah its all conspiracy, but you gotta admit it suits Red Bull right down to the ground. -

on April 15, 2013 ReplyMate there are some good teams coming strong out there and any one of a number can win, you dont need to be in the Red Bullshit mate. What about a lotus seat next year the cars strong and the team needs a communicator (sorry kimi, great driver funny as hell in press conferences) You are far from done in this sport and next year could be even more wide open. Explore all options mate….best of luck for the rest of the season. Better to have lost out but kept your integrity than won as a flawed champion like schumacher!

on April 15, 2013 Replywebber, you seem to have the pace and form, but it just hasn’t been happening this season… and now this grid penalty sounds like salt in the wound too….(i thought JEV would’ve given you a little more room being a sister team and travelling much slower), but just like every other miserable bastard on this website says; keep boxing mate…its going to be super tough to come back with golden boy over a race win ahead and the pace of the ferrari… but you can overcome this mark… some bloody reasonable luck is bound to come your way soon…. we’re with ya man

But he does truly handle it with a level of professionalism that befits him and makes us fellow Australians extremely proud of him. I cannot for a second, imagine how his team mate would fare if he was served with the depths of ill fortune that Mark regularly overcomes.
It’s a credit to you Mark. Keep up all the hard work and effort – the world of F1 respects you more every day. My 7 year old boy only barracks for you!!! -

on April 16, 2013 ReplyWell done Mark on a fantastic drive until the JEV incident – I’ll bet RB couldn’t believe their luck though – with Seb so close, the unexpected pit stop gave them the perfect opportunity to make sure that you would be no threat to golden boy. Obviously the whole RB team isn’t against you, there must be some decent people there or you wouldn’t have stayed, but you have no support at the top – they only want Seb to win, and it only takes one or two people in the right place at the right time to make sure that “mistakes” (e.g. fuel and wheel)and slower pitstops, in addition to less effective race strategies, to ensure that you stay behind Seb. Also, there are drivers in the sister team who will be hoping to take your seat if you leave, so don’t assume they will do the right thing in future, even if they are slower than you, or even if you have right of way. If the opportunity arises Mark, please go to a team next year who will appreciate you, perhaps Ferrari or Lotus. I understand why you didn’t go to Ferrari last time, as you hoped you could still work close to where you live with people that you know, and you knew the car was good enough to win the Championship. But if you really want the Championship Mark, you might have to sacrifice the comfort of being close to home for a couple of years to win it with another team, as there is no way Red Bull will let you win. The haircut looks great by the way! Good luck – you make us Aussies proud!

Just go out and show on track how good you are. We are all behind you. Looking forward to you putting your car on pole in Bahrain. “GO GET EM” GOOD LUCK MATE.

on April 17, 2013 ReplyWhat a joke last weekend.Thought that RBR just might have wanted Mark to finish in the points for the Constuctors title, and had got their sister team to let Mark pass in what was a big wide gap and not shut the door.I bet they would have communicated that to TR.if Vettel was about to pass! Cut the crap RBR and just give Mark a fair go.Congratulations Mark on keeping your composure in all this adversity.

Its the Redbull catering,
Just watch what you eat,
And especially avoid the “Sauerkraut”
Best of luck this weekend

on April 19, 2013 ReplyOn contemplation, over the ‘incidents’ during the China race, I figured it was a punishment, because you spoke out on the podium, and that German owner didn’t like his pet being criticised. Of course, it could have been just coincidence, but, if one compares the amount of problems between the cars, your car is way out in front for race place positions being lost, due to both ‘mechanical accidents’, sloppy pit stops and calling you in early, especially when you are in front of that German prat. By the way, all German fans, this is not a criticsm of you, just the team, and its owner.

on April 21, 2013 ReplyWe all stay up or get up to watch u. It makes me sick to the core witnessing the carry on of RB manager & team. U R their best driver it is time they woke up & gave u the same consideration as baby vettel. If they can’t go to a team who will respect your ability don’t go yet demand equality. Like to see what would happen if you drove no 1’s car! Your an Aussie vettel is European that’s the problem. We love u & r 100% behind u. Bahrain is there for the taking yours. Love hugs & kisses Kayte & the gang from Bowral xx
